ZBRUSH

African Wooden Frog Instrument

This wooden frog percussion instrument was my first complete project created in ZBrush for iPad. Based on an instrument from my personal collection, the piece explores how a handcrafted object can be translated into a polished digital sculpture while preserving its warmth and character.

African Wooden Frog Instrument

This project marked my first experience creating a complete piece in ZBrush for iPad. I modeled a wooden frog percussion instrument based on an actual instrument from my personal collection, using it as a reference to capture the carved forms, subtle asymmetry, and handcrafted character of the original object.

The model was sculpted and refined entirely on the iPad before being textured in Adobe Substance 3D Painter, where I developed the layered wood grain, carved surface details, and natural variations in tone and finish. The final render was composited in After Effects, with the color pipeline managed in ACES to preserve realistic material response, balanced contrast, and a true-to-life appearance.

The piece became an exploration of how a traditional handmade object could be recreated through a modern mobile sculpting workflow while retaining the warmth, imperfections, and personality of the original instrument.
